Abstract

Bioceramics are important biomaterials in biomedical engineering because of their biocompatibility, bioactivity, osteoconductivity, and structural resemblance to actual bone tissue. In recent years, materials science and nanotechnology have enabled the use of bioceramics in bone regeneration, dental restoration, tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and implantable medical devices. This comprehensive review covers advances in bioceramics, including calcium phosphates, hydroxyapatite (HAp), tricalcium phosphate, bioactive glasses, zirconia, alumina, and multifunctional ceramic nanocomposites. Priority is given to techniques such as additive manufacturing, 3D printing, sol-gel processing, electrospinning, and nanostructuring to improve mechanical strength, porosity, bioactivity, and cell interactions. Recent advances include ion doping, surface functionalization, and therapeutic nanoparticles to improve antibacterial activity, angiogenesis, osteogenesis, and controlled drug delivery. Recent advances in bioceramic materials are driving the development of bio-medical devices and regenerative therapies, providing solutions to complicated clinical problems in contemporary healthcare. Bioceramics are now utilized in biomedical engineering, yielding remarkable results. We have provided a thorough review of recent developments in bioceramics, their biomedical applications, existing limitations, and future possibilities. We subsequently analyze recent advances in bioceramics for biomedical applications. This review consolidates recent literature from the past 3-5 years to assess published studies and their findings, while proposing avenues for future research due to its broad relevance and importance. We have studied the potential applications of bioceramics in the biomedical and therapeutic fields.
