Abstract

This thesis began as an art-based psychoeducational group for pregnant teenagers, and two out of ten sessions were completed. However, due to several limitations, the study had to be turned into a proposal for the group. The goal of the proposed group is to increase pregnant teenagers’ preparedness (as measured by both knowledge base and competence) for the rest of their pregnancy and for motherhood. Over the course of five weeks, six girls would participate in ten sessions. This group will be hosted at Healthy Families in Hampton, Virginia, and the participants will be members there. The first part of each session will review topics that were found through the literature review to be important to this population. After the psychoeducational piece, the participants will engage in art-making to further reinforce the topics learned. Pre- and posttest measures will be used to determine the effectiveness of the group, including self-report questionnaires as well as the Parent Self-Rating of Abilities and Confidence (PSARC) and Community Life Skills Scale (CLSS). Since the group was not successfully completed, there was no statistical data to review. However, the two group sessions were qualitatively analyzed and were found to be helpful to the participants.
