Abstract
This collection of short fiction—four short stories and five works of flash fiction seeks to explore the chasm between youth and adulthood, the past and the future. Characters at critical stages in their youth ask something different about who they are and what they want. How does one cope with a risky friendship? Can one brother protect and provide for another while coping with the trauma of abuse himself? How can a child cure her mother's depression? Characters may be left ambivalent about the future, but the events of their respective stories will have given them new perspectives on the past and present. My work aims to examine the border between before and after and attempts to show a line that is in fact blurred.
