Abstract
As a reader, I am drawn to poetry and literature that inform me of something new, writings that move me emotionally but more importantly, quench my thirst for new knowledge, culture, and little known history. As a writer, I am compelled to inform my readers of these facts and present them in a way as to evoke deeper meanings and emotions.
THE NEWS REEL is a collection of poems that explores cultural identities, the experimental poetic journalism. It is defined by literature which strives to provide a forum for public criticism and compromise, based on current or past relevant news stories while engaging in the full range of the rhythms of language and the poetic aesthetic. Relationships, race, politics, and death are also explored. It is structured to be an informative work but it does provide bridges for the poet and the reader to connect.
The collection aims to reach the audience in a way that the original news reels did. Before television, the news reels were the only way to inform the general public of a variety of topics ranging from politics, sports, and entertainment. This collection seeks to do more than those short documentaries did by connecting the reader to cultures and events they may not have otherwise known about.
