Abstract

This non-fiction narrative/memoir seeks to explore how war impacts soldiers as well as future generations. Borrowed Time predominantly focuses on Del, Alicia's grandfather, and his battles through World War II as well as life before and after the war.

After a chance visit to Utah Beach in Normandy, France, Alicia travels through Europe attempting to retrace her grandfather's journey through the war. The bond with her grandfather and the power of the historical site leads her to realize she knows little about her hero or the war itself. She returns to her grandfather and seeks the truth, which until then remained unspoken, typical of most WWII veterans. An 85-year-old Del agrees to detail what he can recount, and she uncovers more than expected about the war, their family, and herself. Through this braided narrative, the writer finds how deeply connected the past is to the present, but also that the truth and what we remember as truth are fragmented
