Abstract
Waiting for a Category Five is a series of nonfiction essays that explore the area between the historical and the personal, and the point where our modem lives intersect with the actions, customs and lifestyles of those who came before us. Combining reportage, personal essay and memoir, the collection works to probe the effect history has had on our modern existence. The collection ranges from the personal — a writer' attempt to run a marathon after an injury — to the communal — how a California town is changed after its businesspeople reject a rabble-rousing community motto. At the heart of the essays is a look at how sea level change threatens the future — and the past — of a neighborhood in Norfolk, VA.
