Abstract

Although Clermont, Iowa is not defined in concrete terms, the stories give dimension to the town and make the reader feel as if he or she is a part of the community, overhearing a story at the grocery store or at the bowling alley. The stories work together to show the contradictions of rural life, the caring community that exists alongside the deceit and lies that drive many of its members.
