Abstract

Loss is an inherent part of life. There are losses which we understand as necessary for growth, such as the loss of childhood, and seemingly senseless losses, such as the death of a child or the loss of a sane self, which are more difficult to accept. We often feel threatened with a sense of loss when our lives are about to change.

The stories in this collection deal with various aspects of loss. The characters in the following stories encounter all types of loss and just as there is no singular loss, there is no one resolution. What is significant is how the characters choose to struggle with the loss. In many stories this struggle suggests our capacity to adapt and grow, and our ability to find strength within ourselves and through our relationships with others.
