Abstract
The seven stories in this collection deal with the wonders and horrors of love, especially within families. The narrators include teenagers, a working mother; a middle-aged divorcee, a young woman with a secret past; a disillusioned husband, and a grieving mother. Change — love, death, and what comes in between — puts them at odds with themselves and the world. As they encounter the alienation and destruction that come in life, they struggle with their own limitations and those of others.
All of these stories are set during contemporary times in Virginia Beach. Many refer to Chick's Beach, a small stretch of land by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
