Abstract

Originally conceived as a series of memory exercises, the essays contained in Breathing Space: Memories and Stories soon became a platform for examining the lore of my past. These meditations brought forth fragments, perceptions, and reactions that seemed connected to the present in some powerful, yet mysterious way; unruly images and sensations that became potent tools for revealing the stories echoing through my life.

The essays contained here have their basis in the facts and fictions of my own life, but more importantly, they are explorations of memory's role in creating story. These essays are a quest for understanding both the nature and the act of remembering, as well as the power of story to create a sense of self for navigating the inner and outer landscapes of meaning.
