Abstract
The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. Human nature stands in their way. The characters are keenly aware of slights and sins committed by and against them, and as they muddle through their lives, they seek to square their perceptions of themselves with reality.
