Abstract

Abstract

Problem: Obesity is one of the most leading causes of health disparities within the United States and impacts type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Many weight loss clinics use medications to aid in appetite suppression. It was unclear whether Phentermine or Semaglutide would help individuals in the Weight Loss Clinic at Hospitality Health Quick Care lose weight and enhance the long-term benefits of reducing HgbA1c and hyperlipidemia.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the health impact of weight loss medications on patients’ weight, BMI, HbA1c, and hyperlipidemia.

EBP Questions: 1) What proportion of patients enrolled in the weight loss program are on weight loss medications? 2) What proportion of the patients on weight loss medications adhere to their medication regimen? 3) Is there a difference in health outcomes following participation in a weight loss program? 4) Is there a difference in health outcomes between patients on a weight loss program using Phentermine compared to Semaglutide? 5) Is there a difference in health outcome between patients on a weight loss program using weight management medications (Phentermine or Semaglutide) who adhere to the medication regimen compared to those who do not adhere to the medication regimen?

Methods: A causal-comparative research design with 2 groups was used for this study.

Outcomes: Within subjects analyses revealed a significant improvement in weight, BMI, and lipids for patients taking weight loss medications. It is important to note, only weight was significantly lower for patients in the Phentermine group when compared to the Semaglutide group. These results were not adjusted for baseline values.

Significance: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including weight control, is important to develop positive health outcomes towards decreasing obesity, lowering HbA1c, and decreasing hyperlipidemia. Over time, the use of Semaglutide and Phentermine may have positive effects on decreasing obesity, HbA1c, and lipids.
