Author/Artist Bio

Dagoberto Gilb was born in Los Angeles and spent many years in El Paso. His most recent book was Gritos, an essay collection which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. He is also the author of Woodcuts of Women, and The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuña, and The Magic of Blood, which won the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award and was a PEN/Faulkner finalist. Among his literary awards are a Whiting Writers' Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Anthologized widely, his fiction and nonfiction has appeared in a range of magazines including The New Yorker, The Threepenny Review, Harper's, GQ, and Latina. His forthcoming novel is The Flowers, and he is the editor of a much anticipated anthology of Texas Mexican literature, Hecho en Tejas. Gilb spent sixteen years working as a construction worker, twelve in Los Angeles as a journeyman high rise carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He is currently on the faculty of Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas.
