Abstract

The major objective of this research was to study the maintenance decision process for systems with economic dependency. A probabilistic model was developed according to the proposed Markov model. After determining the maintenance cost through the markov models, we introduced the other costs associated with the device like operating cost and capital recovery cost, to get the total cost of all the activities involved in keeping the device. The optimal equivalent uniform cost can be found to occur at a particular number of life stages in the system. The nature of the equivalent uniform cost curve is dependent upon the deterioration cost, minimal, major and Poisson failure repair costs; hence, the curve changes according to these costs. Thus, equivalent uniform cost is a function of the various costs involved in the maintenance system.

In this thesis, research has been conducted to:

1. Study and characterize the failure repair process of a continuously operating device;

2. Develop a markov model for this device. The model is generally applicable to any systems with similar characteristics to those of this device;

3. Develop effective solution algorithms and computer programs for the developed markov model with a system of linear equations;

4. The optimum maintenance rate, λm,opt can be determined for different sets of assumptions for failure rates, repair rates and cost rates from the computer codes specifically developed for this thesis;

5. Integrate operating costs and capital recovery costs into the solution algorithm to determine the optimum replacement time for a device even while it is being maintained optimally.
