Still Life with Figurine: Oil on Canvas [Drawing & Design]

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

Artist Statement

This work is an exploration of the Dutch still-life painting style based off my own display. I chose a variety of textures and materials in hopes to understand how to best demonstrate the effect of light and shadow on each surface. I was influenced by the Baroque painter Caravaggio’s technique of utilizing high contrasting light and shadow, and sought to mimic a similar drama. I chose deep, rich colors with subtle but intricate highlights. The combination of a muted, shadowy background and reflective materials such as the ceramic figurine, glass bottles, and metal planter further play off this concept.
