The Long-Term Effects of Developmental Language Disorder in Adolescents and Adults within the Justice System

Kelsey Adair, Old Dominion University

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

Developmental Language Disorder, also known as DLD occurs in at least two children in every classroom across America. But not every child is identified with the disorder. This can lead to misdiagnosis, language problems, and behavioral issues all of which can lead to struggles inside the classroom and outside. A DLD diagnosis is a lengthy process, and it takes a trained professional to see the signs of the disorder. The long-term effects of an untreated language disorder can have detrimental effects on a young person’s future. Not being able to capitalize on education can lead to frustration, dropping out of school, and then turning into issues with law enforcement. High numbers of adolescents and adults within the justice system show signs of Developmental Language Disorder or communication disorders in general. This article will review the literature that has already been written on the subject, introduce researched based statistics of adolescents and adults who have been observed within the system, personal research done by the author, and statements made by individuals involved with this scene.
