06 - Queer Innovations Lab

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

The Queer Innovations Lab at ODU is an interdisciplinary project highlighting student and faculty research, scholarship and creative works. Q Lab will offer the opportunity to experience three interactive virtual reality environments built to represent LGBTQ historical spaces in Hampton Roads. Participants will see the sights that queer people might have seen in the past, hear their voices, and imagine stepping on the same streets and crossing the same thresholds.

Also on display will be other Q Lab projects including student comics depicting local LGBTQ history, oral history collection work, podcast production, and short documentary films highlighting local queer history.

Q Lab projects use robust archival research and community outreach to preserve local queer history and spark curiosity about local stories and experiences that expand our understanding of queer history beyond major metropolitan areas. We provide meaningful hands-on opportunities and live demonstrations to experience that history and encourage innovative efforts to build new community spaces/opportunities together.
