15 - The Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at ODU

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

The Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides access to high-quality flow cytometry services to support the research of all ODU investigators, as well as the research community in Hampton Roads, including Hampton University, Norfolk State University, and the American Red Cross. The facility houses advanced instrumentation, including a BD FACSAria Fusion cell sorter (housed in a Class II BSC), a Cytek Aurora Spectral Cytometer, and an ImageStreamX Mark II imaging flow cytometer. The services offered include unassisted and assisted sample acquisition, as well as cell sorting. Additionally, VetScan HM5 Hematology and VetScan VS2 Chemical Analyzers, NanoString nCounter, and Agilent Seahorse XF24 Analyzers are available for use. In addition to providing technical services, the facility offers scientific expertise to help researchers effectively utilize modern flow cytometry technology. This support enhances the scope and quality of scientific research conducted at ODU. Flow cytometry is essential for investigating various biological processes, including cytokine production, cell proliferation and activation, mitochondrial activity, and reactive oxygen species production. The use of FACS instruments enables the precise measurement of these processes, advancing research in fields such as cancer research, immunology, and cell biology. Furthermore, the facility promotes collaboration and innovation by providing training programs and consultation services, enabling researchers to design experiments and analyze complex data effectively.
