Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

The gaming industry has long been shaped by gendered and heteronormative structures, often marginalizing both women and queer individuals in game development and representation. This presentation will explore Queer Game Studies as an emerging interdisciplinary field that challenges these dominant norms, a study I am much familiar with as it will be highlighted in my thesis in grad school, which I will be starting in the summer.

I love studying this topic as advocating for more inclusive narratives and helping marginalized individuals find themselves in online spaces is my passion. Additionally, I will examine the historical roles of women in technology, highlighting their contributions to gaming and computing despite systemic barriers.

Bringing ideas from feminist and queer theory, my research will highlight the significance of LGBTQ+ representation in video games, the work of women game developers, and the broader implications of technological access and equity.

Presentation Format:

A poster featuring:

  • Key concepts from Queer Game Studies

  • Case studies of women in gaming and technology

  • queer representation in video games
