Into the New World: The Success and Appeal of Korean Pop in the West

Presenter Information

Description

Millions of music video views. A United Nations speech. A Grammy nomination. What’s next? After a decade of broken records, sold-out world concerts, and cultural firsts, Korean pop supergroups continue to rise to the top. Few multicultural acts have been able to bleed into the stubborn Western music industry, but groups like BTS, SuperM, and NCT continue to make headline news. What are the “miracle factors” that contribute to K-pop’s massive rise in popularity? Evidence suggests that some of these are the changing landscape of the music industry, the ever-increasing versatility and quality of its artists, and the growing support and social media presence of its fans. But how exactly do these things promote the growth of K-pop in the West, and will they be enough to ensure its continued phenomenal success?
