The Effects of the Achievement Gap On Arts Education Based On Youth Socioeconomic Status

Date

April 2020

Description

The arts in every form -- including dance, visual, musical, writing and more -- contribute to our society. The arts serve as a bridge for the youth in many lower income communities to connect to a different side of themselves, when given the outlet in schools and their communities. This presentation will examine the achievement gap within our education system and the effects it has had on students and schools generationally. The achievement gap is how students are achieving better or worse based on factors like socioeconomic status, race, school placement, school resources, and more. Unfortunately, arts education is one of the first budget cuts in schools, creating a further divide. This presentation will not only examine how important arts education is in schools but how the lack of it contributes to the achievement gap we observe in students around the country.
