Sarah E N Kohrs
About the Poet
Born on March 28, 1979, in Woodstock, Virginia, Sarah E N Kohrs graduated from The College of Wooster in 2001. An educator, artist, researcher, and poet, she is best known for her influx of intricately-woven imagery that leaves the reader breathless. Her heart for teaching has taken her from the public high school classroom to homebound tutoring and almost two decades of homeschooling. From 2015-2022, Kohrs directed The Corhaven Graveyard, historically known as Sam Moore Slave Cemetery in Shenandoah County, Va, for which she received the 2016 Preservation Virginia’s George W. G. Stoner and Melville Jennings Research and Education Award. Concurrently, she served as the managing editor for The Sow’s Ear Poetry Review, a non-profit publication of poetry and fine art based in Winchester, Va. Kohrs served ten years on the board of Valley Educational Center for the Creative Arts, serving as president from 2022-2024, during which time she received grants to lead Alive with Art, a series of creative arts workshops to offer healing through art for community members after the difficulty of the pandemic and political tensions.
Her first collection of poetry is Chameleon Sky (2023), which received the 2022 Kingdoms in the Wild Chapbook Poetry Prize. Kohrs’s awards and honors also include the Peter K. Hixson poetry award from Writer’s Relief (2023); as well as Poetry Society of Virginia’s Dr. Lucile E. Thompson Memorial (2024), Judah, Sarah, Grace, & Tom Memorial (2023), Ekphrastic Poetry Award (2021), Ada Sanderson Memorial (2019), and Don Frew & John Newcomb Memorial (2019) awards. To date, Kohrs has approximately 70 poems published in anthologies and literary journals; one of which was nominated for a Pushcart. She humbly acknowledges the Manahoac, on whose land she now resides along with her husband and three sons in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
