Abstract

CIOs should be at the core of the organization. They play more and more critical roles in organizations. However, CIOs have not been paid enough attention in many firms. This can be partially observed in a lack of studies about CIOs, for instance, how CIOs influence the organizations, and how organizations' settings influence the CIOs. Technical initiatives or innovations may be the bridge between CIOs and firm performance. Different theories have been employed concerning CIOs, innovations, and firm performance. For instance, the resource-based view (RBV) has served as a theoretical foundation in related studies.

Drawing on RBV, attention-based view (ABV), business strategy, strategic alignment, and upper-echelon theory, this study investigates the impact of CIO presence, ideated digital innovation (IDI), commercialized digital innovation, business strategy: Miles and Snow’s Typology which is represented by a business strategy index, strategic ability, operating efficiency, and CIO tenure on firm performance. It attempts to fill the gap of the need for studies about CIOs in general, and fill the gap of the need for influences of firm-level internal factors such as business strategy, strategic ability, operating efficiency on these relations, and the need for studies about CIO tenure and CIO presence during major shock. A Commercialized Novel Digital Innovation (CNDI), which focuses on novelty, is proposed. This paper extends the literature about CIO tenure, CIO presence, and innovations by providing deep insights into the relations among CIO presence, CIO tenure, IDI, CNDI, firm performance, and firm-level internal factors, including firm business strategy, strategic ability, and operating efficiency. Statistical analysis, such as multiple regression and fixed effect methodology, is employed.

This paper has included two sections. The first section suggests that CIO presence is positively associated with firm performance (consistent with previous literature). Positive relationships between IDI and firm performance, CNDI and firm performance, and CIO presence and firm performance are confirmed. The moderating effects, including business strategy index, strategic ability, and operating efficiency, are partially supported. Section 2 finds that CIO presence and tenure play a positive role during major shocks. Three conclusions could be made. IDI, CNDI, and CIO presence benefit firm performance. Firm internal factors such as business strategy index, strategic ability, and operating efficiency could influence the relationships, e.g., between CIO presence and firm performance. At last, CIO presence and CIO tenure play critical roles in handling unexpected events.
