Abstract
Exchanging products and services in conjunction with the supply chain is evolving into the flow of goods, information, and capital. As an interconnected and complex network, the value of the international supply chain is increasingly apparent with technological innovation and the information explosion. The theoretical insights and practical tools serve to manage innovation and collaboration in the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven global economy.
This thesis investigates the relationship between AI patents and the dyadic international supply chain. It explores innovation and AI as internal factors and the competition between buyer and supplier as external factors contributing to buyer firms’ productivity and profitability. Using three real-world datasets of patents, financial portfolios, and supply chain relationships, this essay finds that AI patents inputs of supplier firms are positively associated with buyers’ financial performance. AI patents inputs of buyer firms are negatively associated with buyers’ market value and return on assets (ROA) but are positively associated with buyer’s return on intangible assets (ROIA). Secondly, buyers with coopetitive relationships have more significant financial performance than those without coopetitive relationships in the high-demand AI technology industry. Third, there is a negative effect on buyer firms’ financial performance when buyers with high AI patent investment collaborate with suppliers exhibiting high AI patent input.
