Abstract

This dissertation explores the impact of TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) on the motivation and college completion rates of first-generation rural community college students. Utilizing a qualitative approach centered on testimonios, this research captures the lived experiences of students at a rural community college in North Carolina, focusing on how TRIO SSS influences their educational journeys.

Through narrative inquiry, the study documents the personal stories of TRIO SSS graduates, highlighting the program's pivotal role in enhancing student retention and success. The findings demonstrate that TRIO SSS is essential in providing targeted support that aligns with the students' unique challenges and needs. This support not only aids in academic achievement but also fosters a sense of belonging and commitment to educational goals.

The dissertation reveals that personalized support systems are crucial for first-generation students, impacting their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and helping them navigate the complexities of higher education. The testimonios show that effective support services can transform student experiences, leading to increased perseverance and success.

This research contributes to the literature on TRIO SSS, advocating for the integration of testimonio methodologies to deepen the understanding of student needs and enhance support for marginalized populations. By doing so, institutions can promote greater educational equity and improve outcomes for all students.
