Abstract
Wireless communication systems have experienced rapid advancements over the last decade, with 5G systems becoming the regular standards and 6G systems being under development. However, the naval ship environment still requires more study due to the special indoor characteristics of the spaces below the deck, where the metal structures strongly impact the propagation characteristics, being prone to signal degradation, dead spots, and unreliable connectivity. This paper presents the research work conducted by a team of undergraduate students from Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) majors. The work was a partnership between Old Dominion University engineering programs and Booz Allen Hamilton, through a sponsored project. The students investigated the available software modeling options and settled on using the ALTAIR software suite. The layout of the USS Wisconsin, which is open to the public through the Nauticus Museum and Maritime Discovery Center in Norfolk, was modeled and the propagation simulation results were compared with real measurements performed on the ship. Students investigated the options of using access points versus radiation transmission line (RTL) cable, for various frequencies. This project offered an excellent opportunity to involve undergraduate students in very actual and meaningful research that made them go well beyond the background learned from the classes, helped them understand the current requirements of industry, and prepared them for employment upon graduation.
