Abstract

This thesis is a collection of short stories woven together by vignettes of lyrical prose. The stories are self-contained and connected by motifs, and they offer both retellings and explorations of various Bible passages—like Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jonah in the Whale, Judas’s Betrayal, The Sacrifice of Isaac, David and Bathsheba, and the Raising of Jairus’s Daughter. The narrative thread of this collection primarily arises in the vignettes of lyrical prose, which appear between each short story. These vignettes use the Seven Days of Creation as a frame to depict one daughter’s discovery of herself and all the things that created her—her family’s tumultuous divorce, her Cajun heritage, and her relationship with faith and the Bible.
