Abstract

Under the Department of Energy’s STTR funding, BEM Controls LLC performed research from July 2, 2018 to April 1, 2019. The purpose of this research was to design, develop and demonstrate the technical feasibility of the blockchain enabled energy trading platform for managing complex exchange of kilowatt hours and negawatts. The energy trading platform was developed in the open-source HyperLedger Fabric blockchain framework and the performance of the blockchain network was evaluated. Key research findings and results include (1) the successful design and development of an open-architecture blockchain-based energy trading platform able to execute smart contract transactions across eight use cases involving DSOs, buildings and DERs, (2) integration of additional market participants such as demand response aggregators into the network design, and (3) achievement of key performance metrics surpassing 10,000 transactions per minute at very low latencies (sub-seconds) in a cloud environment. This feasibility study suggests that the proposed open-architecture blockchain platform, delivered via a cloud infrastructure, is capable of enabling Peer-to-Peer (P2P) trading of both solar PV and negawatts at a performance level suitable for real-world hourly transactions in a microgrid environment. Furthermore, the modular design of the developed blockchain network enables easy integration with other energy management platforms such as BEM Controls’ WiseBldg, which allows building owners, DER owners, and DSOs operators to intelligently control, monitor, and transact generated electricity as well as demand reduction capacity.
