Abstract

This study is a phenomenological qualitative study on the emotional experience of adults taking the Art Therapy-Projective Imagery Assessment. The literature review of this study includes research on: the emotional experience of test taking, therapeutic, collaborative, and person centered assessment, emotional response to looking at art, emotional regulation during test taking, as well as research on art therapy assessment. This participants of this study included four adults between the ages of 18 and 16 years of age, recruited from the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The participants were administered the Art Therapy- Projective Imagery Assessment and then interviewed about their emotional experience while taking the assessment. The Assessments and interviews were video and audio recorded, and the interviews were transcribed. Data-analysis of each transcribed interview and cross-data analysis was performed by the researcher and a peer reviewer to deduce common themes that were then triangulated with existing literature. Five major themes emerged: Emotion Related to Performance, Emotion Related to Directive or Directive- Related Constructs, Emotion Related to Reason for Art-Making, Emotion Related to Content, and Emotion Related to Media Choice. The findings included that Participants’ experiences may concur with assumptions previously held about how the assessment’s design may effect the assessee’s emotional experience. Some implications for future research include replication of this study with children and adolescents, replication of this study in a clinical setting, and replication of this study with the researcher and assessor as separate roles.
