Abstract

Burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization are negative experiences that can pose problems for many health professionals, especially mental health professionals. This study is a preliminary study aimed at identifying the prevalence of these experiences within the field of art therapy. A mixed methods research design consisting of pre-existing measurements and qualitative questions were implemented into an online survey and dispersed through various online media. There were 88 participants who completed the survey. Responses were analyzed with results indicating that there was a presence of burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization within the field. Another aspect of the study was aimed at understanding the importance of self-care to combat these negative experiences. Many of the qualitative questions were directed toward understanding the importance of self-care, specifically personal art making, and participants’ views on the effectiveness of self-care. This study provides the field of art therapy with initial data that can be further expanded in order to continue to understand burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization within the field.
