Abstract
Using Moustakas’ heuristic self-study methodology, this research explored the use of unconventional art processes and materials in artmaking. Due to a lack of literature on processes and material in art therapy practices, this self-study aimed to answer the following: how does the use of unconventional materials affect the creative experience; what is the influence of the maker and what is the influence of the material in the creation; what themes, if any, emerge within the artwork and the art making process when using unconventional materials; and what are some implications for using unconventional materials and processes in art therapy? Themes, implications for art therapy practice, benefits, limitations, and implications for future research were made through a thorough data analysis and creative synthesis.
