Abstract/Description/Artist Statement
For the Knowledge and Creativity Expo, I am proposing the installation of an official Virginia LOVEworks sign on the Old Dominion University campus, supervised by faculty member John Roth. This project is part of my own undergraduate research for becoming a public artist. This endeavor will assist in practical and direct training on submitting concepts in a Public Art RFP (Request for Proposal) for municipal, state and/or regional public sculptures, as well as avenues to obtain funding to execute and establish a successful career as a public artist.
As a Carnegie R1 research institution, ODU has a unique opportunity to join the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) statewide branding initiative, which features over 300 signs designed to promote community pride and tourism. For the Expo, I will create a maquette of the proposed permanent outdoor sculpture. This will be constructed out of various materials; each letter will be approx. 12” x 12”, for a total of approx.12” H, 3” W, 48” L.
The proposed design leverages the iconic "Virginia is for Lovers" branding to create a permanent, photo-ready landmark that celebrates our unique identity.
