The Integration of AI in Education

Abstract/Description/Artist Statement

Chat GPT is an exploding, relatively new tool that has taken root in almost every field. This public tool, developed by OpenAI, is an AI chatbot system that applies the transformer-based language model, GPT-3(which now has been adapted to GPT-4). This system is designed to comprehend the context of conversation and respond with text- based information through its internal knowledge base, this internal knowledge base allows it to then retrieve and synthesize data from the internet and give precise answers. The integration of ChatGPT into the counseling and educational sectors has been transformative, forcing educators to adapt to new techniques and methods. Resisting the inevitable integration of AI would be highly implausible due to the rapid speed at which this technology is being implemented across many facets of society. Teachers and professors have effectively utilized this era of AI to tailor educational content to individual student needs, learning styles, modalities, and course-based assignments. Its efficiency, adaptability, as well as accessibility provide the necessary means for students and educators to adequately adapt to a number of situations due to the 24/7 access, wide array of usage, and adjustability to fit particular objective and skill levels. While the possibilities appear extensive, there are some fatal flaws to this seemingly endless usage of this technological advancement. Noteworthy limitations are within the abstinence of human connection, limited ability to process or connect complex ideas, and even inaccurate or incorrect information. Additionally, the ethical consideration of the allowance of plagiarism and/or cheating leaves little room for educators to feel completely at ease with said new technology. Regardless of both the benefits and limitations of the integration of ChatGPT in the educational environment, the primary goal is to cultivate student understanding of when the appropriate times, reasons, and methods of using AI responsibly are.
