Risk and Resilience: The Role of Pain Tolerance and Risky Personalities in Decision Making
Abstract/Description/Artist Statement
This survey will examine the correlation between pain tolerance and how it relates to risky personality traits and people’s ability to make risk judgments. We hypothesized that those who have higher pain tolerance and risky personalities, will make risky decisions. The survey includes three areas: the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ), and the Domain Specific Risk Taking (DOSPERT) scale. The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) examines behavioral risk taking through computer decision making tasks. The Domain Specific Risk Taking (DOSPERT) scale has five domains that measure risk-taking likelihood, risk perceptions, and expected benefits. The pain sensitivity questionnaire will also be used to measure individuals' perception of pain based on real life situations. We hope that this research will help highlight how pain tolerance and risky personalities impact a person's decision making. It could also provide information that can be beneficial in proving risk assessment.
