Mary MacArthur is the executive director of the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. During 1988 she was director of the Nicaraguan Cultural Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of peace and understanding between the United States and Nicaragua. For nearly ten years prior to that she served as assistant director of the Literature Program of the National Endowment for the Arts. She was founder and editor of Gallimaufry Press and the literary journal of the same name (1973-77). She was also a cofounder of Small Press Traffic and of the Writer's Center outside Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Associated Writing Programs Board of Directors.
