Achy Obejas is a widely published poet, fiction writer, and journalist. Her poetry has been published in Conditions, Revista Chicano-Riquena, and Beloit Poetry Journal, among others. In 1986, she received an NEA fellowship in poetry. Her stories have been in magazines such as Antigonish Review, Phoebe, and Third Woman, and in numerous anthologies, including Discontents (Amethyst), West Side Stories (Chicago Stoop), and Girlfriend Number One (Cleis). She writes a weekly column for the Chicago Tribune. In 1989, she received a Peter Ligsagor Award for political reporting from Sigma Delta Chi/Society for Professional Journalism for her coverage of the Chicago mayoral elections.

Description

Obejas read on Friday, October 11, 1996 at the Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center in Norfolk, Virginia at 10:30am.

Achy Obejas also participated in a Panel Event " Writing Past Censors: Private and Public Speakers" on Friday, October 11, 1996 at 1:30pm at Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Other panelists included Elanor Winer; Tony Kushner; and Brian Evenson. The panel was moderated by Michael Pearson.
