Author/Artist Bio

Kareem Fahmy is a Canadian-born playwright and director of Egyptian descent. His plays, which include A Distinct Society, The Triumphant, Pareidolia, The InBetween, and an adaptation of the acclaimed Egyptian novel The Yacoubian Building, have been developed at theaters across the country. Directing fellowships and residencies include Sundance Theatre Lab, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the O’Neill, Second Stage, Soho, and Lincoln Center. Fahmy is co-founder of the Middle Eastern American Writers Lab at The Lark and of the consulting group Maia Directors.

Wednesday, October 6, 4 p.m.

Kent Wascom, Festival Co-director, welcomed the audience and introduced Christopher Hanna, Director of Theatre at ODU. Dr. Hanna introduced and spoke with Kareem Fahmy. This was followed by a reading from Kareem's play A Distinct Society, performed by actors from the ODU Theatre program.
