Abstract
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the set of abilities involved in emotion processing and regulation. The current study examined the relationship between trait EI and general intelligence, personality, and coping. It also investigated whether trait EI was a significant predictor of problem focused and emotion focused coping strategies after controlling for general intelligence and personality, and examined whether trait EI predicted self-reported outcome of a stressful situation and academic achievement. Participants were 106 college students who were individually administered the two subtest version of Wechsler's Abbreviated Scale of lntelligence (WASI), the Schutte Self-Report Inventory of EI (SSRI), the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO PI-R), the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WOCQ), and a demographic questionnaire. Pearson correlation coefficients showed small but significant correlations between trait EI and personality factors of openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. No correlation was found between trait EI and IQ. Significant correlation was found between EI and problem-focused coping. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that trait EI was a significant predictor of problem focused coping after controlling for IQ and personality. EI was not a significant predictor of perceived outcome of a stressful situation or academic achievement. The discriminant validity of trait EI vis-a-vis general intelligence and personality, and issues with measurement of EI are discussed.
