Abstract
Workshop Overview
‘Making Waves in Equitable Coastal Resilience: A National Workshop on Social Equity and Coastal Resilience’ was a three-day virtual workshop held in November 2022. The workshop was organized by a project team of faculty and researchers at Old Dominion University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the Coastal Resilience Center, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. The workshop was intended to bring together researchers and practitioners from government, nonprofit agencies, community organizations, and advocacy groups to discuss issues relevant to coastal resilience and social equity and identify research and practice next steps for advancing equitable coastal resilience. Planning for the workshop was guided by an advisory group representing federal, state, and local governments, private and nonprofit organizations, and academic and research entities. The list of advisory group members is provided in Appendix B. The advisory group provided feedback on discussion topics to be addressed during the workshop and helped identify appropriate workshop invitees. The workshop focused on applied research at the intersection of coastal resilience and social equity, with an emphasis on how such research can make a difference on the ground. The workshop was structured to gain insights from participants on how research-practice collaborations can effectively address equity through implementable, on-the-ground coastal resilience projects. The outcome of the workshop was the development of a research agenda and recommendations for on-the-ground projects or programs that would provide an initial blueprint to guide research and practice efforts to address social equity and coastal resilience in the U.S.
