Abstract
[First paragraph]
Last night I was looking out the window at the growing dusk and thinking about what a friend had said when I confided in him my struggles with character development: “The critics couldn’t do what you are doing in your novel.” For the briefest instant the idea that I do know something about writing character flooded through me until I internalized it and the idea became belief. And then it was gone.
