Abstract

The paper discusses an attempt to explore and assess the economic clustering in Maharashtra by focusing on the MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and large enterprises in six major districts, namely Konkan, Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad, Amravati, and Nagpur. Cluster coefficients, total number of workers, and other economic indicators of units were considered to understand how industries are spread and perform regionally. Our research was a combination of exploratory and descriptive research, ensuring the data to be garnered had already been collected from the reports and records of the governments concerned and of industries. This entails that we have a clear vision of how industries are spread out and their contribution to the economy in these districts. The results show that the Konkan region is identifiable as a powerful MSME as well as a major hub for enterprises, based on the high values of cluster coefficients, which point towards being a highly connected network in terms of small and medium business entities. On the other hand, Pune and Nagpur are identified as relatively major centers for larger enterprises, whereas Amravati had less clustering for larger companies, thus few big business activities existed in this district. Thus, this study will present region-specific investment strategies to unleash the power of those clusters. The study would guide policymakers and investors toward a focus on infrastructural development that would usher in balanced economic growth across Maharashtra's varied industrial regions.
