Adler Planetarium Poster [Graphic Design]

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

Artist Statement

This is a 3D interactive poster that is meant to bring in people to visit the Adler Planetarium located in Chicago Illinois. The Adler Planetarium was coined “America’s first planetarium” and is dedicated to the study of astronomy and astrophysics. Adler Planetarium is a hands-on museum that promotes excitement and curiosity about space and exploration. Here they want you to actively participate while you learn not absorb information that you would see, feel or hear. The target audiences with this poster are both parents and their children.

To achieve this style, I began with a pencil sketch then used Adobe illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Adobe illustrator was used to create the base illustration comprised of shapes and Adobe Photoshop was used to include the textural and distressed elements.

Stylistically, this poster is based on vintage matchbooks. I felt that this style could be used to showcase something old and make it look more contemporary. The museum in itself showcases planets, instruments and tools from years past. This poster is also inspired by the exhibition titled “The Universe in Your Hands”. This exhibition highlights instruments in the Adler Collection that were used by early astronomers. My poster features a combination of a pencil and rocket ship that is exploring deep space. Pulling up on the lead of the pencil opens the center to a cockpit of the rocket ship. These two items together promote education through exploration.

I plan on submitting this poster to future competitions such as the Richmond Show and ADDY awards. The desired outcome is that it is awarded among some of the many great projects to be considered.
