Olivia Gude’s Postmodern Principles and Principles of Possibility [Art Education]
Description/Abstract/Artist Statement
Artist Statement
Olivia Gude’s Postmodern Principles and Principles of Possibility examine a modern approach to art education. The elements and principles of design have long been engraved in the art education handbook, but contemporary artists need to push further. Each of her ideas for the future of art education are put into action in this project. Playing, Forming Self, Investigating Community Themes, Encountering Difference, Attentive Living, Empowered Experiencing, Empowered Making, Deconstructing Culture, Reconstructing Social Spaces and Not Knowing are her Principles of Possibility. Appropriation, Juxtaposition, Recontextualization, Layering, Interaction of Text & Image, Hybridity, Gazing, Representation are her Postmodern Principles.
Seven students worked collaboratively in collaging on each of the cards. Each student was given a few minutes to work on each card before it was given to the next student. During this time the students questioned how they would use these new principles in relationship with the elements and principles of art. The project caused the group to encounter difference, deconstruct culture and engage in not knowing. Appropriation, recontextualization, juxtaposition allowed the artists to explore content. Playing was the most valuable takeaway from this piece. Artists must not always need to take their art practices seriously. Artists need to engage in sustained, youthful playing; playing with ideas, materials, mediums and imagery. This work was created to apply the elements and principles to contemporary concepts and ideas.
