Elegiacal Spelling Bee Poster [Graphic Design]
Description/Abstract/Artist Statement
Artist Statement
Elegiacal is a term that means expressing grief or sorrow. My thought was “How do I get the viewer to take on that emotion from what they are seeing?” Viewing the singer who is passionately singing into this microphone that also takes on its own human-like qualities. I wanted there to be an interaction between the two where they work in unison to define the word. The poster has to include the winner’s name, winning word, definition, and year. The spelling bee poster must in some way focus on combining the word and bees. This combination shouldn’t be entirely literal and should not make this competition seem childish and cutesy because it is not. This competition takes serious concentration, practice and memorization.
After the initial sketch was scanned into Adobe Illustrator I used shapes to create all of the forms and the textural shadows. With this project we made use of pathfinder, masks, and creation of custom brushes.
The artistic influence here was Dawid Ryski. This polish artist and designer reinterprets human and animal forms into basic shapes. The singer is dominant taking over a majority of the composition. Her head wrap takes the form of an elongated bee body, which brings this composition, back around to the spelling bee theme.
The outcome is to take all winning spelling bee words and create posters in this way. I want to focus on jazz singers, dancers, and the overall experience. In some way the amount of sincerity and honesty that can be felt through that genre and scene can be illustrated in a number of interesting ways. This poster has won a semi-finalist award in the 2017 Adobe Design Achievement Awards and 2018 AIGA Blue Ridge Flux Competition.
