In Conjunction with a Nude: Lavinia Fontana’s Minerva Dressing as an Advocate of Reform

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

This paper will argue that Lavinia Fontana’s Minerva Dressing emblemizes advocacy for religious reform within Rome, the center of the Counter-Reformation. This message is communicated through Humanist and Naturalist ideals that reflect teachings that were prominent in Bologna. Fontana, modeling Minerva as a conjunct of pagan and Christian beliefs during the peak of the Counter-Reformation, captures her Humanist ideals while honoring and mastering the newly classified profane image.
