5G Enabled IoT Base Station with RF Measurement Capability

Description/Abstract/Artist Statement

This research project studies implementation of a 5G-enabled embedded computing device that has the capability to perform and log radio frequency (RF) measurements and also acts as an IoT gateway, being capable of interconnecting other IoT devices with a 5G-base station. Several alternatives for software and hardware solutions are discussed to identify a cost effective, capable, and easily accessible device. The existing solutions of open source and off the shelf devices with RF measurement and IoT capabilities are discussed. After implementing the IoT Base station with RF measurement using a Raspberry Pi computing device, the USRP B200 Software Defined Radio(SDR), and Waveshare 5G HAT for Raspberry Pi, the device may be used to study RF propagation in various environments as well as to collect information from IoT sensors and display that information.
