Artist's Statement:
After retiring from the Air Force after 24 years, I thought I had it all figured out. I was free! I sent my daughter off to college, sold my house, and bought an RV. Unfortunately, my road trip was stunted by the pandemic, family needs, and my own health. Pursuing art has made me feel free again, for sure, but it hasn’t been without some growing pains. This sculpture, Through My Eye, is a snapshot of the three years my daughter and I lived in Italy and traveled around Europe. The eye form is constructed from a wine barrel I purchased from a vineyard that was closing down between where we lived and Venice. The iris consists of pictures from our travels printed on adhesive transparency sheets, placed on cut plexiglass shapes. Like the barrel, this "eye" represents a part of my life that has been dismantled and transformed into something new.
