Free Em All: A World Without Prisons

Date

April 2020

Description

Prisons are a fairly recent phenomenon in regards to being the dominant mode of punishment. In the age of mass incarceration, many believe the solution to be things like ending the war on drugs and harsh sentencing. However, prison abolition seeks to do something much more radical and transformative. Manifesting the conditions for a new world that does not put people in cages and finds other ways to mitigate the harms committed by individuals. With an oral presentation I would like to make the theoretical argument for Prison abolition. I will do this by using states, figures, historical analysis and the work of scholars who have engaged with this topic intimately.
