The Challenges of Today’s Youth
Date
April 2020
Description
It is a critical time to be a teenager. From 2007 to 2017, the percentage of homicides of teenagers increased by over 15%, and suicide rates reached an “all time high,” increasing by over 30%. In addition to these fatalities, accidental death rates of adolescents have increased to become the leading cause of death in adolescents in 2019. Children are scared to be children. Parents are sending their children to school with bullet-proof backpacks and teaching them procedures to stay safe when pulled over by the police; because, though they are trained and armed, and the young person isn’t, they still have the authority to shoot if they feel threatened. Anxiety and depression are also dominating the minds of adolescents making them believe the only way to conquer this world is through drug use. I will discuss research into preventable measures to address these concerns.
