Description
Research indicates a higher prevalence of alcohol consumption among college student populations in the United States. This behavior can often lead to a wide array of negative psychological, cognitive, and physiological outcomes. This research uses secondary data analysis from the Spit for Science data set to explore the effects of internalization of symptoms of depression and anxiety and their correlation to alcohol use among college students. The Spit for Science initiative is a longitudinal study focused on how genes and environmental factors come together to influence college student substance use and emotional health. Using this data, the researchers expect to find a direct correlation between internalization of mental health symptoms and increased alcohol consumption. This research will offer new insights into college students’ mental health needs which can help combat internalization of symptoms and the risky drinking behaviors associated with it.
